Qualities to look for while choosing embroidery thread

Thread is the very basic which each one of us have seen and heard in our home since the childhood. It is actually the backbone or rather the asset for any fabric, because you can’t imagine any cloth you wear without the thread which turns it into the desired shape and form.

The embroidery thread is most commonly known as the stranded cotton or embroidery floss. It is a basically a combination of 6 strands, with each strand made up of 2 plies. To use it for the stitching, these strands are separated, as it is tough to use all the 6 in a single go. So they are used with a combo of 2, 3 or 4 strands as per the fabric required.
The major features which makes this thread really lovable is its shine, durability, smoothness, the ability to expose immense beauty via the embroidery made over it. Moreover, it has high tensile strength which makes it more of use, rather than other threads including the rayon, polyester, or nylon.

You can choose from the various varieties available for the embroidery purposes-
1.       Cotton floss-> standard cotton, made from the mercerized cotton. It is a divisible thread where strands are removed before stitching, as per the fabric demands.
2.       Variegated floss-> combo of multi colors, and used as a dye technique.
3.       Rayon/satin floss-> very soft and used for all kinds of stitches.
4.       Metallic floss->100% polyester and ads metallic touch to any fabric.
5.       Silk floss->made from 100% silk, it is best for the cross stitching and tapestry.
6.       Pearl cotton- >a non divisible thread, where strands cannot be separated.

Depending on what your project is depending, the moist suitable type can be selected and  used for stitching work.

Journey of cotton to cotton thread

Basics of cotton threads

Nature has given cotton a quality that make it a smoother, softer and a comfortable choice. Cotton cloth, sheets etc do not get sticky with your skin due to its properties. It can be realized properly more easily than other fabrics. Quality of the cotton depends on the length of the individual fabric.

Cotton thread is a tightly strand of two or more ply of thread that makes a circle when cut in cross sections. It is used for hand sewing and in home sewing machines. They are made up of the cellulose that is taken up by plants and used to stitch fabric like linen, rayon and cotton that also have plan origin. Plan based fabrics may shrink, and cotton thread also have the same shrinkage property. Cotton thread does not have property of stretching. Cotton is also used to hold the piece of garments together
.
Process of cotton thread
Cotton arrives at the mills in large bales. Natural fibre like cotton and wool are spun before they can be woven into cloth. There are various steps that complete the process of cotton to cotton threads. These steps are to be followed

ü  Sorting, bale-breaking and blending: When the cotton bale arrived at mill, the cotton were opened and mixed. Many lots of bales are opened and blended together. Any variation between the bales are removed and minimized properly.

ü  Cleaning by Woving, scutching and lapping: when the raw cotton are mixed properly, it still contain some dirt that have to be removed properly. Cleaning process is done through willowing and scutching. These both processes are done through different machines in similar way

dü  Carding: Next, the sheets of cotton are made into the long length of cotton called silvers. Carding is the process that is actually done through hands using brushes that has stiffed wires. The laps are fed into the last end of the machine. The main job of machine is to make parallel spuns
ü  Drawing and Roving: After the carding process is done, the cotton silvers are needed to be stretched thinned and made more solid. This is done through roving and drawing process. The cylinders containing the cotton silvers were fed into draw frames. The silver have to be passed to machines 3 times. These tubes are twisted by a roving machines to strengthen it.
ü  Spinning: The final step is the spinning process. This process turns cotton silvers into yarns. Yarn is the name given to the long length of cotton threads that is done in weaving process. The machines pull, stretch and twist the cotton into cotton threads.
